JOYFUL – that is the word I would use to describe the Notre Dame School!
From the minute one enters the school, there is a lightness, a brightness, a smile coming up the hall to greet you, be it from a student, a staff member, or the principal herself. While academics and social skills are being taught, and children are moving from classroom to classroom, the atmosphere is filled with warmth, gentleness, and respect. I saw this from the first time I entered, some eleven years ago, and it continues today.
My name is Mary Terry, and I initially came to know Notre Dame School as a classroom volunteer. My own children were grown and out of the house, and I was ready to help out somewhere I hadn’t before. Upon applying, Theresa Frances immediately walked me across the hall and said, “Why don’t you start here?” So, for 3 years I assisted Mrs. Barber and Miss Doris in their class.
I was amazed to find that most of the subjects taught were the same as my own kids at that age, math science, Social Studies. Even poster board presentations were part of the extra assignments given. When things were difficult for the students, they were urged to try again. Whether they mastered the lesson never seemed as important as giving it their best try.
After turning down a request to be put up for the Board of Directors a couple of times, I finally acquiesced and subsequently served two terms. It was during this time that I hesitantly accepted the challenge of chairing our much-needed Hearts and Hammers Capital Campaign. Working with a very supportive committee, and a generous community, we were able to make the objectives of the campaign become a reality. While the work was sometimes intense, the results are outstanding.
My investment in Notre Dame School continues. This year, my husband and I will be Honorary Chairs at the annual gala – An Affair of the Heart. I am humbled to be a part of this exciting event, and I look forward to continuing to support the mission. Please join me at the gala on November 5 at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel. And so I still describe my experience with the Notre Dame School, JOYFUL.
